Independent Scientific Researcher in Applied botanical Chemistry

Bruce A. Cosgrove, BSc., MSc.

Meet Bruce A. Cosgrove, BSc, MSc, an independent scientific researcher specializing in botanical chemistry, formulation systems, and sustainable technologies.

Research Focus

Three core domains defining applied botanical chemistry and system-level formulation research.

Botanical Formulation Systems
Structured, evidence-based plant systems designed for metabolic health, inflammation modulation, and gut function.

Phytochemical Interaction & Bioavailability
Mechanistic understanding of compound behavior within complex matrices to improve absorption, efficacy, and reproducibility.

Environmental & Extraction Systems
Development of plant-derived lixiviants and botanical alternatives to replace mercury and synthetic chemical systems in industrial applications.

Scientific Background & Research Approach

A multidisciplinary scientific career grounded in solution chemistry, applied research, and systems-level thinking.

From early endurance training and competitive athletics to advanced academic work and applied formulation science, my approach has remained consistent: disciplined, evidence-driven, and outcome-focused.

In practice, this translates into the design of structured botanical systems that integrate phytochemical interactions, bioavailability principles, and real-world application.

Professional Career & Technology Development

A multidisciplinary career spanning solution chemistry, environmental systems, and translational botanical science, focused on designing scalable, evidence-based frameworks that bridge plant chemistry with real-world outcomes.

Graduated from Simon Fraser University, Burnaby British Columbia, Canada with a BSc (1977) & MSc (1980) - Solution Chemistry and studied the US Series 7 and completed the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) in 1990.

Using nature’s chemistry to improve human wellbeing reflects my broader philosophy that "human health and environmental health are inseparable".

Over the past seven years, my work in applied botanical chemistry has focused on the development of manipueira, a plant-derived extract solution from the cyanogenic bitter cassava, as a low-toxicity alternative to mercury in artisanal gold extraction. Mercury, a potent neurotoxin, is used by approximately 20 million miners globally and remains the largest anthropogenic source of deadly atmospheric mercury pollution.

Botanical Mercury-Free Gold Recovery Systems

Manipueira & Mercury-Free Extraction Systems

Developed a plant-derived lixiviant system based on bitter cassava (manipueira) as a low-toxicity alternative to mercury and cyanide in artisanal gold recovery.

"Manipueira plant-based gold recovery system clean gold clean conscience"

In July 2021, Manipueira Gold Recovery Technology, Inc. (f.k.a. Alchemy Mining Group, Inc.) was founded.

During a 5-year tenure, I researched, developed, and in January 2026, my Technical Presentation preprint - Four-Stage ESG-aligned Transformative Botanical Strategy for Botanical Lixiviant Systems - DOI: 10.13140/RG.2.2.10793.66400 is published on Research Gate.

This transformative strategy is designed to offer an alternative plant-based system as a lixiviant to mercury and synthetic cyanide salts in artisanal gold processing centers in Southern Ecuador's Portovelo-Zaruma mining district.

In January 2025, my research manuscript - An Examination, Solution, and Transformative Strategy to Replace Mercury and Cyanide Salts in Artisanal Small-Scale Mining (ASM): Southern Ecuador - DOI: 10.2139/ssrn.5049829 is published in the peer reviewed Environmental Chemistry eJournal

"Portovelo-Zaruma mining district Ecuador artisanal gold mining region map"

In 2015, Alchemy Mining Group, Inc., was founded and secured gold concessions in Ecuador’s Bella Rica district. By 2018, research identified the Portovelo-Zaruma region as a significant global source of atmospheric mercury emissions from artisanal mining. This led to a strategic pivot toward developing a plant-derived lixiviant system designed to exceed mercury and cyanide performance in gold recovery kinetics and efficiency.

Film Production & Media Development — Dodge City 2004

During 2008–2009, as Managing Partner of Deacon Publishing and Film Production, LLC, acquired the film rights from Stephen C. Shaver, author of the published novel DODGE CITY 2004. Serving as Executive Producer, I coordinated multiple writers to develop the manuscript for a full-length independent feature screenplay Dodge City 2004 (runtime: 2 hours and 10 minutes), registered with the Writers Guild of America West (WGAW Registry No. 1336579) and published under ISBN-10: 0615129196; ISBN-13: 978-0615129198.

After successfully raising USD $453,000 through the sale of New Mexico Film Office Tax Credits, supplemental financing commitments totaled $USD 10 million to support production of the independent feature film. Unfortunately, development was halted caused by the 2009 Great Economic Crash & Recession.
