Illegal Gold Mining in Latin America: Environmental Impact and Economic Drivers.

Introduction

Illegal gold mining continues to disrupt ecological and research systems across the Peruvian Amazon. Operations near the Panguana biological research station have forced a suspension of work following escalating conflict and direct threats to staff.  

Since 1984, mining activity using dredges and heavy equipment has damaged over 225 water bodies, deforested approximately 140,000 hectares, and impacted up to 73 Indigenous communities, according to a 2025 report from Amazon Conservation.

These impacts reflect the systemic consequences of mercury-dependent extraction methods, which drive both environmental degradation and human risk in low-regulation mining regions.
