Introduction

Using a magnet and tamarind powder in a three-stage chemical and physical process, microplastics can be aggregated via plant-derived binding interactions and subsequently removed from water, representing a low-cost purification approach explored through the Plas-Stick project at The Earth Prize 2026.

⚗️Tamarind-based systems have been investigated for their ability to remove microplastics from water, with both experimental studies and ongoing debate regarding their real-world effectiveness →    

Coagulation (Binding): Tamarind seeds are processed into a fine powder and combined with magnetic particles. The binding behavior observed here is consistent with broader plant-derived extraction chemistry systems →    

Flocculation (Clumping): The solution is agitated, allowing tamarind-derived polymers to bind microplastics into dense aggregates.  

Magnetic Extraction: A magnet removes the tamarind–microplastic complexes, leaving filtered water behind.
